Rooibos Tea

Rooibos tea is known to be an excellent source of antioxidants and has comparable amounts of polyphenols to those found in green tea. The 'Red Bush' Tea as it's also known contains a unique antioxidant called aspalathin which in recent animal studies has been suggested to have a beneficial effect in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

A trial looking at the benefits of Rooibos tea in humans was recently reported by the American Botanical Council. The trial  showed in preliminary results that Rooibos tea protected the body against oxidative damage. This kind of damage plays a significant role in cardiovascular disease. The trial was conducted by Jeanine L. Marnewick (PhD), senior researcher at the Oxidative Stress Research Centre at Cape Peninsula University of Technology in Cape Town, South Africa.

OOlong Tea

There hasn't been as much research done into the health benefits of oolong tea as there has with green tea, however that doesn't mean the results from trials to date are not impressive. One potential reason is that oolong tea has not been as popular as green tea nor as widely known until recently. Another is the fact that oolong contains the full range of antioxidants found in tea, namely catechins, thearubigins and theaflavins. This fact combined with the varying range at which oolong teas are left to oxidise (anywhere from 10%-70%) makes oolong tea a more complex tea to conduct trials with. It's important if you want to start drinking oolong tea as part of your healthy lifestyle that you find ones you enjoy. The quality of the tea is very important too.

Green Tea

Green tea is made from the same plant as Black and Oolong Tea, known as Camellia Sinensis, but retains higher levels of antioxidants than black tea because the leaves are not processed in the same way. This doesn't mean drinking black tea does not contain any health benefits, indeed there have been many studies supporting the benefits of black tea including reducing cholesterol and cardiovascular disease. One of the more topical health benefits from drinking green tea is the suggestion that consuming between 3 - 5 cups a day may help you 'lose weight.' Most studies referred to have been designed to test the affects of the antioxidant ECGC (catechins) either as a beverage or in the form of an extract. Results from studies performed to date suggest that green tea can help you to boost your metabolism and burn body fat.
